Tanneries
Tanneries industry is engaged in doing their export oriented business with renewed verve and determination to make quantum improvement from the existing level as a result thereof the exports of leather & leather products are gradually increasing.
Tanning leather involves a process which permanently alters the protein structure of skin. Making “rawhide” does not require the use of tannin. Rawhide is made by removing the flesh and fat and water, then scraping over a beam, then drying. Before tanning, the skins are unhaired, degreased, desalted and soaked in water over a period of 6 hours to 2 days. To prevent damage of the skin by bacterial growth during the soaking period, biocides, typically dithiocarbamates are used.
Quality of leather & leather products can further be improved to suit the requirements of end users worldwide if scientific methodology and modern technology are adopted and priority is given to dynamic and well organized cattle farming with timely curing of animals’ diseases and skilful flaying in all abattoirs as well as to impose complete curb on unabated smuggling of live stocks.
